Given that both my job and my blog revolve around Mobile Technology and the Mobile Web it is probably a surprise that I haven’t announced a mobile version of my site before now.
There have been various unofficial mobile versions of this blog in the past but this month I decided it was time to come to a final mobile solution. I’m a big Mowser fan and decided to set-up http://m.tarekesber.com to display mobile-ready pages via Mowser. However being a One Web idealist I wanted to make the sites main url mobile aware as well.
At the time the easiest solution seemed to be using Andy Moores Word Press plug-in to detect mobiles and serve them mobile ready pages. This had been used by Carlo on Mobhappy and the results had been pretty positive. While setting this up was a breeze and included Admob integration the actual pages rendered were far too simplistic (RSS feed style). I felt Mowser offered a far better experience across more device rather than having a limited experience on every device
The obvious solution was to create a Mowser WP Plug-in that would use the detection script given on the Mowser Wiki and using that to redirect to the Mowser url. Fortunately Russell Beattie, the brains behind Mowser, is a regular on #Mobitopia so I suggested the idea to him. Literally 15 minutes later he had managed to scramble together a plug-in, and it worked!
So “tarek speaks mobile…” is now fully Mobile Ready! http://m.tarekesber.com is also set-up to work so those of you who love your m-dot urls can still have your fix. I’ll be adding a CSS file for the mobile version shortly. Enjoy!
