When Motorola released the RIZR-Z8 they promised us that it was the first in a line of similar devices rather than a one off, and it looks like they’ve kept their word. A teaser for a new device appeared on O2 UKs website today in the “Coming Soon” section.
Now the fact that the Device was called the Motorola Z10 wouldn’t in itself mean that this was a Z8 successor if you consider that the Z6 and the Z3 both ran different Operating Systems. However the picture gives the game away as it shows the bottom of a silver and black device which is identical to the bottom of the Z8. So what do we know so far? Very little. The teasers only real revelation is that the Z10 will have a 3.2 Mega-Pixel camera and will drop the gaudy black and green colour scheme for a more ordinary Silver and Grey combination.
The absence of solid Specification means I can only speculate as to how the Z10 might improve on its predecessor. The 3.2 Mega-Pixel camera is a good start as this is more the norm for high-end smartphones these days. If Motorola have noticed that deficiency then they would hopefully have also thrown in WiFi support as this is another feature the Z8 was lacking compared to it market rivals. However my biggest hope is that they have done something to sort out the biggest problem with the Z8; It’s speed. As I mentioned in my post on the Z8, the whole user-experience on the phone was ruined by it’s speed. The UI was clunky and had a lot of lag when navigating through the menus. Hopefully the Z10 will either have a more powerful processor or will have had it’s UI code tweaked so that this is less of an issue.
If the Motorola RIZR Z10 has been tweaked with these three changes then it really has a chance at becoming the contender that many thought the Z8 would be. However if the only tweak is a camera upgrade then it looks like Motorola might not have learned from their V3 debacle. It would just be a return to their old trick of releasing colour variants of a popular device with only minor hardware upgrades while completely ignoring the quality of it’s user-experience. I just hope that isn’t the case.
UPDATE: It looks like O2 have taken down the teaser and replaced it with one for the Sony Ericsson K850i…
